Windows: Manually uninstall Intelligent Message Filter v1 - Exchange Server 2003
I was unable to load the Intelligent Mail Filter version 2 (IMFv2) that is included with Exchange Service 2003 Service Pack 2 (SP2) since IMFv1 was still present. Since I had not originally installed IMFv1, I could not see it in the list of Add/Remove Programs and a manual uninstall was required. The following article at Microsoft describes how to do this: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa995865.aspxThe specific event ID I received is also listed on the site:
Event ID: 7514
Severity=Error
Text:
An error occurred while loading Microsoft Exchange Intelligent Message Filter.
The error code is <error code>.
To manually remove Intelligent Message Filter v1:
- Stop all Exchange services (Information Store, System Attendant, SMTP, and Exchange-aware antivirus services).
- Rename the MSCFV1 folder in X:\Program Files\Exchsrvr\bin, where X is the drive letter where Exchange Server is installed.
- Rename the ContentFilter.dll file in X:\Program Files\Exchsrvr\bin, where X is the drive letter where Exchange Server is installed.
- Open regedit and export the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Exchange key.
- Delete the ContentFilterVersion sub key from the registry.
- Restart the server. You should now be able to install Exchange Server 2003 SP2 without errors.
After following this process I was able to successfully install SP2 for Exchange Server 2003, setup IMFv2 properly and have seen a significant reduction in spam.
